September Activities around Boise

September

Now that school has started, some of you may have a little more time on your hands.  Fortunately, the Treasure Valley has some interesting and exciting things you can do to fill that time.  Use some of that time for yourself and enjoy some new experiences or reconnect with some old ones that you’d like to take up again.  Here are a few ideas of activities and events that might interest you.

Japan Day

Monday, September 3:  12:00 pm to 04:00 pm

If you’ve ever wanted to experience Japanese culture then this is the activity for you.  This will be a fascinating immersion into true Japanese culture. There will be booths which will include information on anime, a flea market, and karate booth.  You will be able to stroll through the booths to the sounds of authentic Japanese music such as Koto music and Taiko which is traditional Japanese drumming. There will be performances demonstrating Japanese dancing, specifically the Lion Dance.  Come see a calligraphy demonstration and taste the delights of Japanese cuisine.

Give a “Hoot” for STEM Education at our Nocturne Auction

The Nocturne Auction is for guests 21 and over.

You will want to “flock” to this event benefiting the World Center Birds of Prey.   Come join this evening event while enjoying delicious food, and drinks.  Meet the raptor ambassadors, view the amazing raptor art done by local artists.  Join the bidding on new and original work done by the artists. There will also be a number of Raptor Experiences that will be available for bidding on.  The proceeds of this event go to support STEM educational programs, to help take care of our bird buddies and to maintain the facilities. This event will be well worth your time and money.

Scentsy’s Rock-a-Thon and Fireworks Show

This all-day event by Scentsy is in support of The Women’s and Children’s Alliance.  This organization works tirelessly to help victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault.  Volunteers will sit along Eagle road in rocking chairs to raise money for this organization.  The day’s events will culminate at 9:00 pm with a dazzling fireworks show. Come help Scentsy celebrate their 14th anniversary with this special Rock-a-Thon.

Albertsons Boise Open 2018 Golf Tournament

Thursday – Saturday, September 13-16:  7:40 am Tee Times

Hillcrest Country Club, Boise, Idaho

For 29 years Albertsons has been hosting the Boise Open.  There have been some exciting changes to the fan experience.  Friday, after golfing is done for the day, the popular rock band Cheap Trick will be entertaining golf enthusiasts starting at 7:15 pm.  With the new addition of the Fan Zone, golf spectators will be able to enjoy local foods and beer.  Another new addition is Michelob Ultra Beers FORE Birdies venue on the 16th green. The cost of attending this new venue is included in the price of the ticket.  There are no cover charges or upgrading of tickets necessary to enjoy this new fan experience.

Idaho Rally 2018

Since its inception in 2007, Idaho Rally has entertained folks from around the world.  There are a few different ways you can enjoy this event, as a participant, a volunteer, or as a spectator.  Idaho Rally has it all for you, whether you want to tear up the roads in the Boise National Forest with the staging area in Idaho City.  Having gained national attention, this year’s event is promised to be the biggest yet.

Crater Crawl- Run Around the Rings

Saturday, September 15:  10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Crater Rings National Natural Landmark, Main Cinder Butte Road, Mountain Home, Idaho 83647

Have you ever wanted the challenge of facing a volcano?  Well, if you have, then this is your opportunity. This 10K (6.2 miles) course of rugged terrain at The Crater Rings National Natural Landmark, is sure to challenge participants.  The race goes to the top of the volcano, then down around the crater rings. The course can be run or walked and for those who don’t want that much of a challenge, there is a 2.9-mile course that leads to a breathtaking overlook of the craters.  

September is a wonderful time for new beginnings.  A time to reset and start anew. You could find your inner adventurer or take on a new challenge.

August

August may signal the beginning of the end of summer,  but truly there is still
a lot of summer left to live.  There are  fun and exciting things to do that can fill you with more great summer memories.

Stop Motion Director

These students will have the opportunity to work with others their age to develop a script, design and create sets, direct, and film their own stop-motion film.  Also, throughout the day they will have time to relax, play and discover in JUMP’s unique rooms: the nest, deep tinker, taste buds, showtimes, flutter foot and slide zone.  Lunch and snacks will be included and at the end of the day, they will have a showing of their films.

Tasty Tales Storytime at Guru Donuts

Have you ever heard of story and a cookie?  Well, this is story and a donut.  Throughout the month of August, Guru Donuts together with Rediscovered Books will be hosting this fun event.  There will be 2 story times, the first will be from 10:00 to 10:25 and the second will be from 10:30 to 11:00. Kids donuts with 8oz of milk can be purchased for $2.50.  Adults can purchase an old-fashioned donut and 12 oz of coffee for $2.50.  Also, all books purchased at the event or at Rediscovered Books will receive a 20% discount all day.  So, bring your kids and enjoy this free event.

Cool Summer Nights

Every Friday evening until 9/28/2018: 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Indian Creek Plaza in Caldwell is opening their doors.  Every Friday night is game night.  Using giant  game pieces, you can challenge your family and friends.  There will also be dancing, swing, cha-cha, the waltz and much more.  Food vendors will be onsite to offer  food including beer and wine.

Western Idaho Fair

August 17-26:  8/17-8/25 12pm-11pm:  8/26 closing day 12pm-9pm

There is always so much to do at the fair.  First of all, there are a lot of animals to look at. There will be horses, cows, pigs, chickens, rabbits, and the list goes on.  Check the website for the schedule of activities because you’re not going to want to miss the hypnotist,  Stryker the Dinosaur, or all the concerts!  There will be other shows as well and of course
the carnival rides.  Also, there are so many booths to peruse and spend your money at.
And don’t forget all the food trucks. You’re sure to find plenty to eat and enjoy.  Watch for STEM activities for the kids and the Llama and Alpaca Costume Contest.  That’s sure to be a fun time.

Day of the Dog: Run, Walk
or Jog 5K or 10K

Sunday, August 26th, 2018:  This is a virtual race so you can do it anywhere you want.

You might be asking, “What is a virtual race?” Just complete a 5K or 10K by walking, running, or jogging, preferably with your favorite four-legged fur baby, any time during the month of August until August 26th.  Register online for $20-$30 and you will receive a Day of the Dog medal and your fur baby will receive a tag for their collar.
15% of the proceeds will go to Freedom Service Dogs of America, a non-profit organization who custom trains rescue dogs for those in special need of assistant dogs.  These dogs are trained to the individual’s needs.

What’s that in the sky? It’s not a bird.  It’s not a plane. It’s not even Superman.  It’s hot air balloons!  It’s time for this year’s Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic.  Wednesday is Kid’s Day.  Come early that day so the kids can get a free, tethered balloon ride in the balloon of their choice before they go off to school.  Throughout Ann Morrison Park there will be many other activities for the kiddos.  Friday night is Night Glow when the balloons take flight in the evening.  Watch as the setting sun glints magically off the colors of the balloons.  Sunday morning kids as well as adults will have the opportunity to enjoy a tethered balloon ride.  Volunteers who want a hands-on experience preparing a balloon for flight are welcome – no experience needed.  You can find the signup form and restrictions for those under 18, on the website. Don’t miss out on the beauty and fun.
