January Events Around Boise

January

Happy New Year!  Welcome to 2019. Wow!  Can you believe it’s been 19 years since the turn of the century?  So much has changed. We’ve seen great advances in technology, medicine, and even entertainment.  When facing a new year, it feels like a good time to make changes in our lives as well. The Treasure Valley holds plenty of opportunities to make those changes and try something new.  Here is just a small taste of what our community has to offer for the month of January.

Idaho’s 6th Annual Potato Drop

New Year’s Eve, 3pm – 1am:  Idaho State Capital, Downtown Boise

A lot of fun and food is promised at this free, fundraising festival.   New this year is the VIP room with a heated tent, food, drinks, and dancing. Don’t forget to reserve your spot because space is limited.  Make sure to find your way over to the “Tuber-Luge” public tubing hill, and the “Big-Air Rail Jam” snow park for some “Spud-Tacular” fun. Kick off the new year with a bang by watching Boise’s World Class fireworks display.  

Mendelssohn & More Concert

Friday, January 11, 2019:  7:30 pm to 9:00 pm:  Brandt Center, 707 Fern St, Nampa, Idaho,

This whimsical rendition of the classical period composers is sure to tickle your musical bone as well as your funny bone.  Come early so you can attend the pre-concert event at 6:30 pm where you can mix and mingle with members of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra.  Or stay after for the Post-Concert event immediately following the performance.

Brian Regan

Brian Regan is considered to be the funniest comedian alive.  His Netflix special, Nunchucks And Flamethrowers premiered November 21, 2017, earning him a place with some of the greatest comedians.  Each year Brian’s comedic style consistently draws large audiences to his performances on his annual 100 city, North American tour.  Don’t miss out on this tremendous event sure to make you cry…with laughter.

Family Field Trip Weekend

Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2019:  10:00 am to 4:00 pm:  World Center for Birds of Prey, 5668 W Flying Hawk Ln, Boise, ID,

Trying to entertain the kids on a dime?  Well, look no further, because the Birds of Prey center can do that and even educate the kiddos in the process.  There will be live bird demonstrations, crafts and activities, and the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, and beautiful surroundings of the interpretive trail.  If you miss out on this activity, don’t worry because on February 16th and 17th you’ll have another chance to enjoy a day with the birds.

Yoga with Martha

If getting fit is one of your New Year’s resolutions then starting this free Yoga class might just be what you need.  Martha is a certified instructor who can teach you the basics of beginning Yoga. Participants must be 18 years and older.  There’s no need to bring a mat, they will be provided. Just bring a good attitude and a willingness to learn. You will walk away invigorated and relaxed.

Boise Center-Idaho Remodeling and Design Show

For only $6 in cash, you can peruse 120 displays of the latest in kitchen, bathroom, and landscaping renovating and decorating.  But, it doesn’t stop there. Spend time attending their many educational seminars to learn the how-tos of renovating and decorating.  Let them help you to become the Joneses that everyone is trying to keep up with.

Computer Basics

Tuesday, January 29, 2019:  6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Ada Community Library, 10664 West Victory Road, Boise, Idaho

Basic computer skills are a must in our high-tech society.  This class is designed to teach those needing to learn basic computer skills or just need to brush up on ones they once knew.  You will come away from this class with keyboarding skills including using functions and shortcuts.

In January you never know where the new year will lead you.  But, right now, take some time to plot a course and possibly create some bucket list items.  You may be surprised by the exciting directions that course can take you.

Boise Area December Activities

December is an exciting time.  There are so many activities that a person can participate in.  Not only does the Winter Garden aGlow at the Botanical Gardens continue, but it is now joined by other beautiful holiday displays.  As the season wears on there will be more holiday displays to enjoy and more activities to revel in, such as holiday bazaars and markets, chances to meet Santa, and fundraisers to support.

Christmas Lights Tour

Saturday, December 1, 2018 – Wednesday, January 9, 2019:  Showcase Limousine,  W 38th Street , Garden City , Idaho

Have you ever wondered where the best holiday lights displays are?  Well, Showcase Limousine knows. They have mapped them all out and will take you around the valley on a one and half hour tour.  The package includes a driver adorned with a Santa hat, a red carpet entry, cheerful holiday music, and enough treats to please any sweet tooth. This can all be enjoyed while viewing a cozy fire burning in a virtual fireplace.

Old Boise Model Railroad Holiday Open House

Every Saturday throughout the month of December:  Downtown Boise at 6th and Main in The Historic Pioneer Bldg., Basement Level. (Below Jimmy Johns)

10 am – 4 pm

This FREE event is sure to excite any train enthusiast.  You will be thrilled by this unique display of model trains zooming along the tracks, around picturesque mountain scenes and towns.  On display will be models of different types of trains, such as freight, diesel, and a special Christmas train. Hidden among the scenery will be figures of notable people, and activities for the patient observers to find.   This event is free to the public but donations are always welcome.

Ida Ho Ho Benefit Concert

Visual Arts Collective, 3640 Osage St, GARDEN CITY, Idaho:  Advanced purchase tickets are $15.  $20 if purchased at the door.

Audio Lab Recording Studios and the Women’s and Children’s Alliance have gathered together some of Idaho’s best performers for an amazing night of entertainment.  This 21 and older concert is in support of the Women’s and Children’s Alliance to help provide a place of safety, healing, and freedom for all those who are victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault.  Come enjoy the talents of Eilen Jewell, Audio Moonshine, Ashley Rose, and a.k.a Belle, to name just a few of the incredible artists who will grace the stage that night. Don’t miss out on this one of a kind holiday show.

Ballet Idaho- The Nutcracker

This breathtaking ballet will for sure be the highlight of your holiday season.  Joined by the Boise Philharmonic, the Idaho Ballet will bring to life this beloved holiday story. Over 100 children from the Ballet Idaho Academy will help portray the story of Clara and the nutcracker, turned handsome prince, on their delightful adventures.

Scentsy’s first-ever Point of Lights Concert

With 365 trees and 26 miles of lights, this concert promises to be a magical adventure. This is your chance to hear enchanting music performed by choirs from Eagle and Rocky Mountain High Schools.  BSU’s Meistersingers will also be there to delight all with their renditions of their favorite holiday songs. Enjoy tasty treats as you meander through the stunning light display.  There will be plenty of photo opportunities and don’t forget to checkout the life-sized snow globe in the Sentsy lobby.

One Mic Stand up Comedy Night

If you like free entertainment then this is the place to be every Monday night.  Laugh it up with your favorite local (and pass through) stand up comedians. If you’ve got an itch to try out being a stand up comedian then come at 7:30pm to sign up.  The parking is free and so are the laughs. The only cost is the two item minimum.
